Practicing What I Preach

My kids recently went to a Worldwide Devotional for the Youth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. President Russell M. Nelson and his wife, Sister Wendy Nelson, were the keynote speakers. My kids attended with my nieces and nephews, and when they all came back to the house, they were overflowing with information. I decided I needed to take a listen myself.
So while I was driving around during the next day or so, I listened to it. Wow. It was powerful. (I linked to it above, if you're interested in listening. And here is a link to the "For the Strength of Youth" pamphlet he named above as well.)
He gave the youth 5 invitations. The first one was holding a 7 day social media fast. My son started his that night. My daughter held one a week or so later. And I'm starting to feel like I need to follow suit. I know this was directed to the youth of the church, but I feel like my kids are watching me. They are looking to see if I am going to practice what I preach. We all know actions speak louder than words.
So I've decided I am going to also take the plunge and do a 7 day social media fast, starting this afternoon. This is going to be tricky, since my work is blogging and podcasting, and social media is a HUGE part of that. But I want my kids to know that I love our prophet and want to be obedient to his counsel, because I know what he teaches us comes from God.
So, until next week! I'll return on the 4th of July!!
