Mr Darcy's Pemberley - a Pride & Prejudice REAL LIFE experience!! A visit to Lyme Park - Disley, England
One of my favorite movies is Pride & Prejudice (the BBC version that is 5-6 hours long with Colin Firth & Jennifer Ehle). I know this seems to be everyone’s favorite, but it is so good!!
It has been my dream to someday go visit Mr Darcy’s house (Pemberley). The moment when they pull up to Pemberley is iconic and I’ve always wanted the same view in person. Last spring, I got my wish!!
Pemberley, which is actually called Lyme Park, is in the Peak Disctrict, in Disley, Cheshire, England. Let me show you around.

When we were planning our trip to London, we realized Lyme Park was quite a ways away. It is actually near Manchester. So, we decided it would be more worth our time to fly into Liverpool and drive to Manchester. We flew into Liverpool (I read Pride and Prejudice on the flight! It was so magical!) in the late afternoon, drove to see the Preston Temple (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - so beautiful!!), headed to Manchester for dinner and to spend the night.
We woke up and headed over to Lyme Park (about a 30 minute drive from our hotel).
The gate is about a mile from the house. As you drive to the house, you get to see the gorgeous grounds of the park. The parking lot is down the hill from the house, and there is a little place where you can purchase food, etc. To go to the house you walk up a steep hill, there is a shuttle for those who would have trouble with the walk. We did fine walking, it’s not that far.
The house is enormous and old. The architecture is breath taking! It was built in the 1300’s and added onto through the centuries.
I loved being on the immaculate grounds. The weather was cold, but the skies were clear and beautiful. If it wasn’t so cold, it would’ve been fun to take some walks all over the trails of the park. On a warm day, it would be so fun to spend some extra time there doing that.
I was worried the inside of the house wasn’t going to be very fun, but it was actually fascinating to learn the history of the mansion and see what parts of the house were pretty much the same in the movie and what was different. I learned a lot of history and it was even more fun than I thought it would be.
Once we were done visiting, we started on our way to London. We had originally wanted to see Stonehenge on our way into town, but realized we wouldn’t make it there in time for it to close. The gates close there a couple hours before the actual site closes to visitors. We were a bit bummed, but then realized the Harry Potter Studio Tour was on our way into town, so we headed there instead. I am so glad we did!!!
It was SOOOO incredible!! Pride and Prejudice and Harry Potter in the same day?!! Magical!!
Go read our post about what to expect at the Harry Potter Studio Tour. It was truly mind blowing!!
