First day of School and I have a High School Senior

The first day of school is always an emotional roller coaster for me. Sure, it's nice to have the house a little quieter during the day, but there were so many fun things I still wanted to fit in during the summer. Five of my seven children are in school, so the noise level change is pretty shocking when school is back in session (which is actually quite nice). But the first day is always a reminder for me of how fast my kids are growing up.
Today was especially hard for me. My first born, my sweet daughter, had her first day of her senior year of high school. I can hardly believe how fast the time has gone. I held it together pretty well until about 10am. I was scrolling through my Facebook feed and saw one of my friends had a side by side picture of her senior daughter today along with a first day of kindergarten photo. I lost it. My 3 year old has been consoling me ever since. My emotions have been at the surface the rest of the day.
We have a lot of other new beginnings in our family this year. I have a 7th grader who has his first day of middle school, and a 9th grader who started his first day of high school. It's a big day for all of us.
But as much as I get sad they are growing up, there is nothing more wonderful than to see my kids learning, progressing and doing more grown up things. My daughter hardly needs me anymore. She takes care of me more than I take care of her most of the time! Nothing brings me more joy than seeing my kids develop their talents and learn more about who they are and what they want to become.
So cheers to a new school year! A new beginning. The kids are starting fresh, I'm excited to start fresh, too. It's like having a second chance at New Years resolutions. When I'm done crying, I want to get my house cleaned up from the summer dirt, hit the gym, and eat some healthy food. I want to be better at getting together with my friends on a regular basis, be a kinder wife, a more patient mama. I want to keep learning new things, too. And more than anything- I want to take a long quiet nap!!
