Home School & Distance Learning Pep Talk !! (Episode #102) - (Re-release)
Being thrown into home schooling our children without warning, has thrown a lot of us for a huge loop. Today I have called in the experts to guide us through learning together as families and giving moms a boost of encouragement and grace as we take on this new challenge together figuring out our new schedules and daily routines.
It is so wonderful to have 3 mamas on here today, all with different personalities and ways they have home schooled their children. Beth Summers and Hannah Stevenson are returning guests and we have a new friend, Shannon Maguire, to finish it off. This is our longest episode yet, but I didn’t want to wait another minute to share all of the wonderful encouragement and help they have to offer during our distance learning.
Pop in those head phones while you’re off on a walk, working on a home project, or wiping down the house for the 100th time this week! Listen through the link below, or through your favorite podcast app.
Please, take a minute to rate, review and subscribe to the podcast- I would appreciate it so much! That is how our podcast becomes more searchable on podcast apps.

Beth’s thoughts:
Be careful of the comparison trip. Social Comparison Theory says that we use our upward or downward spirals to determine our self worth.
Zoom out of the comparison trap and look at your values. Instead of holding yourself next to other people, find your self worth in how aligned you are are with your values. Turn to a trusted source, such as God, and ask how you are doing. Then sit with it and give yourself time to feel and think.

Hannah’s thoughts:
Home school is very different from Public School so there should be different expectations.
www.welleducatedheart.com is one of her favorite resources for getting started.
If you have varying ages of children at home, it is very helpful to use the buddy system to pair up children to work together or entertain each other while you have one on one time with the other children.
Find your child’s passion and run with it through all different kinds of learning!

Online learning
If you are doing online school through your district, and not your own home school curriculum, ask the teacher what is absolutely mandatory and what is optional work. Don’t be afraid to express what is realistic for your family. There are benefits to both public and home school. You need to pick what route is best for you.

Shannon’s Thoughts:
Shannon explained to us that she views herself as the Director of her children’s education. She organizes different learning opportunities instead of being the teacher of all things.
She believes children learn so much just be living- they are little sponges. She practices “strewing” in her home, where you leave things out for your children to casually discover.
Her biggest encouragement would be to not stress yourself out. This is a high stress time as it is with the world in turmoil. Give yourself a break. This is not normal so don’t expect perfection.
This is a great time to solidify your family culture. Take advantage to come together.
